Sitting down with Diana Avila, owner and certified specialist in dermatological skincare from Nouvelle Peau Medispa, explains the different types of lasers available in the Market and what the benefits and pains they address.
If aging, acne, or too much time in the sun has left your face with blotches, scars, wrinkles, or lines, laser skin resurfacing may help your skin look younger and healthier.
Laser skin resurfacing removes skin layer by layer with precision. The new skin cells that form during healing give the skin a tighter, younger looking surface.
So, what are they main types of lasers and their usage ?
1) For pigmentation: A laser peel (resurfacing) treatment uses targeted beams of light to reduce hyperpigmentation. It boosts the overall skin tone by picking up and removing flecks of excess pigment in the skin looking spotty.
2) For acne and rosacea: Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes the blood vessels in your face to become visible and your face to appear red or flushed. Patches of small, pus-filled bumps are another common symptom. Laser therapy helps with rosacea as well because that has a bacterial element. Additionally, sebaceous glands temporarily shrink, and collagen production is promoted, making the skin stronger and less sensitive.
3) For deep cleansing and brightening: A facial called ‘the Hollywood Peel’ works to deep clean and deliver immediate brightening. A carbon paste like charcoal is massaged into skin and left to dry. It adheres to dead skin cells and goes slightly into the pores, then because the carbon is black when the laser hits it, it vaporises instantly and as it lifts off it takes the impurities and dead skin with it. “It’s just wonderful and this is why several celebrities get it done!”
4) For hair removal: There are multiple machines for hair removal but ours is safe for all skin colours and works on light brown through to black hairs. If you have fair hair a good time to do laser hair removal is in winter when you have more contrast between your skin and hair colours. Laser hair removal can drastically reduce hair growth—to the point that you can stop shaving altogether. You can get it done anywhere on the body, and the machine can cover large places fast without having to spend hours and hours there. “While hormonal hair will not be fully removed, it will certainly help decrease its thickness, and amount. I have several patients in their teen years, or post partum who simply have a hormonal situation, but they are very happy with the results. It may never go away, but it will definitely be under control.”
What is the difference between Laser & IPL?
It is often mistaken that IPL and lasers are the same. IPL is an Intense Pulse Light that treats using a full spectrum of light with different scattered wave lengths, while a laser uses one specific wavelength of light.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Slightly different to laser, IPL makes use of a scattered. The bright light passes through the epidermis, drawing out the pigment producing cells and dispersing the uneven pigment. IPL Photofacial can be used on the face, neck, chest, shoulders, back arms, legs and just about anywhere else. Photofacial is also an effective treatment for broken veins and spider veins. What does IPL treat ? pigmentation, broken veins and intense rosacea, rejuvenation and acne.
